Hark! Meet Valiant Combat Company – Michigan area

  1. What is it that you do?

Valiant Combat Company is a live steel fight/stunt troupe which performs combat shows at festivals and fairs. We can build to a variety of genres.

  1. Where are you located?

We are based out of Central Michigan. Our training facility is in Lansing.

  1. What got you interested in starting out in this business?

I have been an actor most of my life. In 2016, I became a Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors

  1. When did you start selling or performing? In general or at renaissance fests? Began doing festivals in 2019
  1. What was your local faire or home faire? The Michigan Renaissance Festival
  2. How do you handle thefts or copying of your works? Our work is hard to copy or steal.
  1. Why Renaissance Faires or theme? What is it that made you so interested in this period? I have always been interested in history, originally Medieval/Renaissance, but now I study many cultures and period
  2. At faire, what was your garb/attire your usual go to? Originally Elizabethan, to go with my home fair, but it has gone more fantasy, so now it’s a Nordic/steampunk cross. Although I have all manner of styles.
  1. What makes your act/wares unique or different? Live sword fighting without armor or equipment
  2. What makes you stand out? We make a great effort to entertain, and interact with our audiences. Also, we employ mixed weapon styles.
  3. What was your very first experience at a renaissance festival? What education or training if any do you have that led to what you do? First experience was performing armored combat shows at King Richard’s Fair in Chicago in the late 1970s. I am a Certified Teacher of Theatrical Combat with the Society of American Fight Directors

  1. What would you say to a new person looking to try out or vending? A new person auditioning for me needs to have had some form of acting experience, and any training in a physical art involving props , which might include things like color guard.
