MacDudley Dragon Games – MI Area

What is it that you do or sell?

A: We own and operate MacDudley Dragon Games. As Captain Horatio MacScurvy & First Mate Sassafras

Where are you located?

A: Southwest Michigan

What got you interested in starting out in this business?

A: A fantastic and kind friend of ours asked us to help with starting a renaissance Faire called Mayfaire Renaissance Festival. At that time I was going to be responsible for the remembrance booth. But after talking with him and with his encouragement I created our first business and my husband started doing demonstrations with his Trebuchet. After the games started to multiply we decided that we wanted to not only educate young people or adults about different aspects of history but also we wanted to use our games as an opportunity to bring awareness to disabilities that have touched our lives

When did you start selling or performing?

A: May 2004

What is your local faire or home faire?

A: Currently we do not have a local faire in Michigan. However there is a faire in Indiana that we do the last weekend of August and it is called Michiana Renaissance Festival. We have done that Faire since its conception.

Do you travel and if so, how far will you go?

A: Oh yes you cannot be in this business and not be willing to travel. Unfortunately until my husband is able to retire from his mundane job which is in a couple of years we have to stay kind of close to Michigan. But we have traveled as far as Kentucky and Tennessee. In the future we plan to do much more traveling. One of our goals is that we will be able to travel throughout the year going to different faires/ festivals of all types in the U.S.

What advice do you have to give to others that are just starting out in this business?

A: The best advice we could give to someone who wants to truly do merchant or be an Entertainer is to make sure you stick to your guns. Also it helps if you have a great passion for what you are doing. This is not an easy life for anyone especially if you have a disability. We do it because all of the joy of talking with people and to tell them about different disabilities and just show people that people with disabilities are just like non disabled people. My point is that you need to have a passion for what you do and you need to stick to a goal or two. It’s okay to listen to people but really you need to just keep moving forward and take what they say with a grain of salt.

What is your favorite food at faire?

A: My husband, Allen and I love to share a dragon leg. But if available I love fried mushrooms on a stick. My husband loves rat on a stick.

What is your set up for your booth?

A: Whatever Faire we are performing at we make it a rule to trying get their 24 hours before the faire opens. This gives us enough time for set up and gives us enough time and tailor-make are set up to the faire or Festival that we’re at.

Why Renaissance Faires or theme? What is it that made you so interested in this period?

A: We both love the history and the simple life that Renaissance Faires offer. Plus the people are nice and friendly and accepting of you.

Do you do this all year long or do you just do it once a year?

A: Our goal is to do this year round.

How else do you promote your games?

A: Social media sites such as but not limiting to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and we have a website.

How did you find out about us?

A: Facebook

In five years (or less) our goal is to: we are currently working on the children’s series of books. If everything goes well we will have the first one published soon. Would also like to start doing more faires outside of Michigan in other words we want to be traveling through the US.

At faire, what garb/attire is your usual go to?

A: My husband, Allen plays Captain Horatio MacScurvy a Scotsman so he wears a kilt. I play First Mate Sassafras who is visually impaired I also have another disability, a spastic diplegia a form of cerebral palsy. But that hasn’t been brought out yet. I also wear a kilt but my character was born in Ireland.
